We called after seeing a recommendation on Facebook and we are very happy we did. We had them build a covered pergola off our back sliders, and since we live in a log home, we wanted rough hewn lumber. Not only did they order the perfect stuff…

Bathroom remodel with a marble walk-in shower and floating double vanity
LAYOUT & SCOPE

From a dated bath to one that works

Many of Longmeadow's colonial revivals and Tudors still have original 1920s and 1930s tile bathrooms, and the first decision is whether to restore that character or start fresh. The original bathrooms in Longmeadow's postwar and later houses are usually sound but dated: a tub with a tile or fiberglass surround, a single vanity, not enough storage and not enough light. The common bathroom remodel here is a tub-to-shower conversion or a larger walk-in shower, a new vanity, new tile and better lighting, with a double vanity in the primary bath where the room allows it.

PLUMBING, WATERPROOFING & VENTILATION

Waterproofing and ventilation done right

A tile shower is only as good as what is behind it. We install a waterproofing membrane under the tile rather than relying on grout and cement board alone, slope the shower floor properly to the drain, and fit an exhaust fan sized for the room and vented outside. Those details are invisible once the job is done, and they are the reason a bathroom lasts. Original tile in older Longmeadow homes was often set in a thick mortar bed, so taking it out means more demolition and a floor that has to be rebuilt to the right height for the new tile.

TILE, FIXTURES & FINISHES

Tile, vanities, glass and lighting

This is the part most Longmeadow homeowners enjoy: tile, vanities, countertops, fixtures, glass shower doors and lighting. We can work from your selections or help you choose, and we install all of it. A heated floor is worth considering in a primary bath, and it costs far less to add while the floor is already open than at any other time.

WALK-IN SHOWERS & ACCESSIBILITY

Walk-in showers and aging in place

A walk-in shower with a low or no curb, a bench, a handheld shower and blocking for grab bars is one of the most common requests we get on Longmeadow housing. On a ranch, where everything is on one floor, it is often the change that lets someone stay in the house for years longer.

Common questions about bathroom remodeling in Longmeadow

Do I need a permit to remodel a bathroom in Longmeadow?

Usually, once plumbing, wiring or walls change. In Massachusetts, plumbing and electrical work is done by licensed trades and has its own permit and inspection, separate from any building permit, while a purely cosmetic refresh may need none at all. We work out which apply and schedule the inspections. On most Longmeadow housing of this era, the permit side is routine.

What does a bathroom remodel cost in Longmeadow?

On Longmeadow's housing the structure and plumbing are usually predictable, so size, layout changes and finish choices drive most of the cost. We still price it at the house rather than over the phone, because the estimate is free and an itemized number you can trust is worth the visit.

How long will we be without the bathroom?

Ordering the tile, the vanity and the shower glass before demolition keeps the room out of service for the shortest time, so that is how we schedule it. You get a written schedule before demolition starts.

More about bathroom remodeling in Longmeadow

The bathrooms in Longmeadow's housing

Longmeadow's housing runs to colonial revivals, Tudors and substantial mid-century homes, many in conservation-minded neighborhoods. Houses of that era usually came with one or two modest bathrooms built to a standard plan, which is why the same remodels come up so often here.

The good news is that the plumbing and framing are predictable, so the conversation moves quickly to what you want: a walk-in shower in place of the tub, a double vanity in the primary bath, more storage and better light.

The substantial mid-century homes elsewhere in Longmeadow usually have a primary bath and a hall bath, and remodeling both at once is often more efficient than doing them years apart.

Remodeling a bathroom in Longmeadow

Longmeadow's bathrooms range from original 1920s and 1930s tile baths in the colonial revivals and Tudors to the primary baths in its larger mid-century homes.

Some owners want to keep the character of an original tile bath, and we can work with that, matching the style with new tile while updating the plumbing and waterproofing behind it.

Longmeadow's houses are well kept, and protecting the rest of the home during a remodel, with dust barriers, covered floors and clean daily cleanup, is part of how we work there.

When to schedule a bathroom remodel

A bathroom remodel in Longmeadow is interior work, so unlike a deck or an addition it does not wait on the weather. Winter is often the easiest time to get on the calendar.

What does take time is materials. Custom shower glass, some tile and specialty vanities can be slow to arrive, so we order them before demolition rather than leaving the room torn up while we wait.

Permits and inspections in Longmeadow

Work in Longmeadow is permitted by the Longmeadow Building Department under the Massachusetts State Building Code, and the contractor doing it has to hold a Home Improvement Contractor registration as well as a construction supervisor license. We hold both, and we file in our name, which is what puts the code responsibility on us rather than on you.

A bathroom remodel can involve three permits: building, plumbing and electrical. Plumbing and electrical work is done by licensed trades and inspected on its own schedule, usually at rough-in before the walls are closed and again at the end. We coordinate all of it so the inspections happen in the right order and the job does not stall.
