Best construction company!!! Very responsible and professional. Always on time, always ready to answer all questions!!! Highly recommend to anyone looking either to build a house, to do extension, build a porch or something else. They do free estimates and do the job quickly.

Dan’s Construction just completed a Trex deck with two sets of stairs for me. I am thrilled with the outcome! Dan was pleasant and efficient in overseeing our deck project, his crew worked tirelessly to complete their work, despite bad weather and the issue of trash on my site…

I came across Dan’s Construction by accident while searching the internet and I’m glad I did. I read the reviews and checked out the company and contacted for an estimate. He was quick and professional and reached out enthusiastic to work…

Dan is super nice and easy to work with. His team worked all day to get our roof replaced which had damage down to the rafters. He is knowledgeable, fair and trustworthy. I highly recommend this company and will definitely hire them for future projects.

We called after seeing a recommendation on Facebook and we are very happy we did. We had them build a covered pergola off our back sliders, and since we live in a log home, we wanted rough hewn lumber. Not only did they order the perfect stuff…

Dan and his team completed a full replace of the deck, staircase and balcony at my home. From the beginning Dan was knowledgeable and responsive to my inquiry including being quick to respond to any changes to material or additional items…

A deck built for an open site
Hampden is a town of back roads and large wooded lots, and a deck here usually looks out over trees rather than at a neighbor. Most of these houses are farmhouses, capes and custom homes set well back from the road, which leaves room to build the deck the house actually wants. With the space and the views these Hampden properties tend to have, the deck can be the room you use most. Exposure is the thing to design for: an open site gets sun, wind and snow with nothing to break them, which pushes the decking materials toward capped composite such as Trex or PVC rather than a bare wood deck in most cases.

Footings that hold on an exposed lot
An open Hampden lot means the frost goes in hard and the wind gets under things. Footings go below the 48-inch frost line, posts are sized and braced for the exposure, and where the grade falls away we design the structure for the height rather than stacking extra posts on a shallow pad. On a wooded Hampden lot the footings have to miss the roots of the trees you want to keep, and that is worth laying out on site before the drawing is final.

Railings and stairs on a sloping site
On a Hampden lot that falls away, a deck can sit high enough that the railing is doing real work. Guards over 30 inches above grade, 36 inches minimum height, and stairs laid out to land on solid ground rather than on the slope. Cable and aluminum railing keep the view; we use them where the view is the point.

Four-season rooms for the view
On a Hampden property with something worth looking at, a four-season sunroom is the improvement people regret not doing sooner. Insulated floor, a roof built for the snow load, and glazing placed for the view rather than symmetry. A screened porch is the lighter version and still gets you most of the season.

Deck repair, patios and outdoor living
On Hampden housing the common call is a deck fifteen or twenty years old with a sound frame and worn-out decking, railing or stairs. That is a repair and a re-deck at a fraction of the cost of a new deck, and on a wood deck that is only weathered, a clean, a sand and fresh stains and sealing buys years. Where the footings or framing have gone, we say so. There is often room for more, too: patios, pool and hot tub surrounds, pergolas, gazebos and outdoor kitchens, planned once and built in stages.

Common questions about decks in Hampden
Do I need a permit to build a deck in Hampden?
For a new deck, yes. We file with the Hampden Building Department and manage the inspection schedule through to sign-off, so you never deal with the permitting yourself. Two inspections matter: the footings, before anything is poured over them, and the framing, before the decking covers it. On a Hampden property the setbacks are rarely the constraint; access for the footings usually is.
What does a deck cost in Hampden?
On a Hampden lot the site drives it: how far the grade falls, how high the deck ends up, and whether a machine can reach the back of the house for the footings. We price it after seeing the site, not over the phone, because access and ground conditions move the number. The estimate is free and itemized.
How soon can you start?
Footings depend on ground conditions, so the shoulder seasons book differently out here than they do in town. Call us early and we will give you an honest date rather than an optimistic one.
Talk it through with someone who has built here before
Tell us what you are planning and we will tell you what it takes. The estimate is free and there is no obligation.

More about decks in Hampden
Building a deck on a Hampden lot
Hampden is a small rural town best known for the Laughing Brook sanctuary and its winding back roads. Housing runs to farmhouses, capes and custom homes on large wooded lots, most on well and septic, and on a rural lot the site matters as much as the house does.
Whether a machine can reach the back of the building decides how the footings get dug, and how far the grade falls decides how high the deck ends up and therefore how much structure and railing it needs. Both are worth establishing on the first visit rather than on the first day of work.
Most Hampden properties are on a private well and septic, and a deck has to stay clear of both. The tank and the leach field need their access kept, and nobody wants a footing poured through a line nobody marked, so we locate them before we lay out a single post.
Building a deck in Hampden
Hampden sits in the hills southeast of Springfield, with Scantic River running through and the Laughing Brook sanctuary at its center. Most of the town is wooded, with houses set along winding roads rather than in subdivisions.
On a long, wooded Hampden driveway, getting a delivery truck and an excavator to the back of the house is the first practical question. Where a machine cannot reach, footings are dug by hand, which takes longer and shows up in the price, so we look at access on the first visit.
A deck surrounded by woods stays shaded and damp, and fallen leaves sit on it for weeks each autumn. Capped composite or PVC handle that better than bare wood, and leaving a little more space between boards helps the leaves wash through rather than rot in place.
When a deck actually gets built
Deck work in Western Massachusetts is bound by the ground rather than the air. Footings have to go 48 inches down, so the build starts once the frost is out, and the calendar fills from the first warm week in Hampden as everyone has the same idea at once.
Late in the season is genuinely fine, though: there is no interior to protect, so a deck framed in September and decked in October is a normal job and easier to schedule. On a rural site a wet spring can push footings later than a dry autumn would.
Permits and inspections in Hampden
Work in Hampden is permitted by the Hampden Building Department under the Massachusetts State Building Code, and the contractor doing it has to hold a Home Improvement Contractor registration as well as a construction supervisor license. We hold both, and we file in our name, which is what puts the code responsibility on us rather than on you.
A deck is inspected twice: at the footings, before anything is poured over them, and at the framing, before the decking covers it. Both are ours to schedule and meet. The details inspectors look at hardest are the ones that matter most anyway: footing depth, the ledger connection and its flashing, guard height over 30 inches, and baluster spacing.
On a Hampden property that is not on town sewer there is a third track: anything that adds a bedroom is a Title 5 septic capacity question for the board of health, and work near wetlands brings in the conservation commission. Both are worth settling before design rather than after.
